BBR’s Chairman, Nick Rumney, will be speaking at leading industry event Optrafair next weekend (18-20 April) as part of a series of presentations organised by patient communications specialist, Optimed on Stand E80.
As the owner of one of the country’s most successful independent optometry practices, and an extremely well-respected figure in the field of Optometry, Nick is often asked to share insights into the latest industry developments.
Optimed has invited a number of well-known faces to present on a variety of topics - Nick will be hosting a presentation entitled ‘How OCT has changed my view on the retina.’
Nick says “OCT has transformed our ability to diagnose conditions as soon as any changes take place, even before the patient has experienced any symptoms. Early diagnosis makes it far more likely that patients can be successfully treated, averting potentially serious vision loss caused by conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma.”
BBR was the first practice in Herefordshire to purchase a 3D OCT (optical coherence tomography) machine made by Topcon back in 2007. OCT produces 3D images of the retina that can be ‘peeled’ back layer by layer to identify the earliest signs of degenerative diseases.
“Significant developments in technology such as OCT make it even more important for people to attend regular eye examinations rather than waiting until symptoms occur - we can see more of the retina now than was ever previously possible,” says Nick.
“I am delighted to be have been offered an opportunity to share BBR’s experiences with other professionals so that more people can benefit from the early diagnosis offered by using OCT. This is especially so now that we have the latest and brand new OCT Triton, the most detailed high resolution OCT yet. Once again a first for BBR - enabling people in Herefordshire to access the most up to date eye examination.”

Nick is currently scheduled to present on Saturday from 12.00 and 4.00, on Sunday from 1.30 and 3.30, and on Monday from 1.00 and 3.00. All presentations should take no longer than 30 minutes each and all delegates will be offered a complimentary alcoholic or non-alcoholic cocktail of their choice to enjoy during the presentation.
Spaces are limited to 30 per presentation so if you haven’t already booked, please follow this link to reserve your seat.
BBR has worked with both Optimed and Topcon for a number of years. Nick has helped to promote Optimed’s Captiv8 patient communication and marketing software to industry peers in Australia in 2013, and has supported efforts to raise awareness of OCT from as far back as 2011 where he gave a presentation to Optometry students at the Hochschule in Berlin.
Last year he spoke to peers in Poland with a presentation entitled ‘OCT has landed’ as part of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics (EAOO) sixth annual conference in Warsaw.
