BBR chairman to share knowledge of OCT in Barcelona at Academy 2017

BBR chairman Nick Rumney is to be a keynote speaker at Academy 2017, a joint conference between the European Academy of Optometry and Optics (EAOO) and the Spanish national organization Consejo General de Colegios de Ópticos Optometristas (CGCOO) that is being held in Barcelona next week.

Taking place from 12 to 14 May, Academy 2017 will bring together key stakeholders from over 30 countries to discuss and share the latest research, education and clinical practice in optometry, optics and dispensing, and vision science.

The main theme for the conference is “Vision and new technologies” and the aim is to consider both the impact of technology on vision and the benefits derived from the new technologies for diagnoses and treatment.

Nick will first be joined on May 12 by Professor Dr Holger Dietze from Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin, in leading a Clinical Skills Workshop looking at the Role of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in Clinical Practice.

Then, on May 13, Nick will be leading a seminar on ‘Clinical Disruption: Ophthalmic imaging and the rise of the machines’ where he will be discussing new trends in imaging techniques.

Nick said: “The aim of the conference is to provide delegates with information they can apply to practice, discuss with colleagues, or in any way use to develop their career.

“BBR was the first optometry practice in the Herefordshire region to invest in an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner in 2007 and I am a firm advocate of the technology, having given talks around the globe on its benefits. In 2016 BBR Optometry started using the first of the fifth generation OCT instrument, the Swept Source.

“I am delighted to again be asked to impart my knowledge and share my experience of the benefits of imaging techniques in optometry practices with fellow clinicians at this major event.

“The technology allows optometrists to view 3D images of the inside of the eye which enables us to determine a precise diagnosis of any visual problems, offering the best possible outcomes for patients,” he added.

Nick Rumney is an award-winning third generation optometrist whose practice was the first in the UK to introduce 3D-OCT and continues to invest in the latest technologies and advances which led to him last year receiving the Philip Cole prize for in-practice research from the College of Optometrists.

3D OCT imaging is automatically part of your BBR Private Eye Examination and is included in the extension to the NHS Sight Test – find out more about our Retinal Imaging capabilities here

The conference is being held at Barceló Sants hotel.
