BBR chairman to share contact lens expertise in South Africa

BBR chairman Nick Rumney is to share his expertise with fellow optometrists at the Contact Connect International Contact Lens Conference being held in South Africa next week.

Taking place from 22 to 24 October, the conference has been organised by the Contact Lens Society of South Africa and Nick is one of four international optometrists invited to speak at the event being held near Johannesburg.

Nick says: “This three-day event is aimed at bringing together practitioners who are passionate about fitting contact lenses with those who would like to become passionate about fitting lenses and I am delighted to have been given a speaking slot for each of the days so I can inspire fellow optometrists.

“I will be sharing my knowledge about many of BBR’s own specialisms including myopia control, where we now offer MiSight lenses clinically proven to slow myopic development, as well as Dry Eye, otherwise known as ocular surface disease.

“This year has seen BBR open a specialist Tear Clinic dedicated to the diagnosis and management of ocular surface disease, relieving symptoms and preventing long-term complications.

“Finally I will be speaking about a subject very dear to my heart, namely Optical Coherence Topography (OCT) and its role in contact lens fitting.

“BBR was the first optometry practice in the Herefordshire region to invest in an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner in 2007 and I am a firm advocate of the technology, having given talks around the globe on its benefits.

“In 2016 BBR Optometry started using the first of the fifth generation OCT instrument, the Swept Source and this technology allows optometrists to view 3D images of the inside of the eye which enables us to determine a precise diagnosis of any visual problems, offering the best possible outcomes for patients

“I am delighted to again be asked to impart my knowledge and share my experience with fellow clinicians at this major event which has attracted 120 of South Africa’s contact lens practitioners and suppliers,” he added.

Nick Rumney, an award-winning third-generation optometrist, is regularly invited to speak at optometry conferences across the globe. He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) since 1995 and was this year elected Vice-President of the European Academy of Optometry and Optics (EAOO). Contact Connect is being held at The Fairway Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort.
