Mari Shepherd

Mari Shepherd

Audiologist

Mari graduated from the University of Southampton in 2008 with a BSc in Audiology and went straight into working for the NHS. After leaving the NHS, Mari worked for a leading audiology equipment manufacturer in a training and clinical support capacity, covering their hearing and balance portfolios. During her time there she had some incredible opportunities to work with and learn from people right across the industry, from hearing aid manufacturers through to key opinion leaders, researchers and front line audiologists, in both the NHS and private sectors - helping to shape her own clinical approach.

“I decided to join The Hearing Care Partnership because of their high standards of clinical care and their customer service matches my own values. Working with The Hearing Care Partnership enables me to have the time, resources and range of technology to provide the best individualised care possible, on an ongoing basis. The most important thing for me is to work for a company that genuinely cares about every one of their patients.

In my spare time I can often be found sailing or in the gym. I have been involved in dinghy racing from a young age and regularly compete nationally, as well as having raced internationally. I have also competed in Olympic style weightlifting over the last five years.”

When she’s not keeping the workshop ship-shape, she spends her time with her adored guinea pig, Billie, enjoys spontaneous day trips, board games and growing vegetables. Having recently left home, Laura has been getting to grips with the culinary world and often brings in her delicious smelling homemade lunches and cakes.

MSci Optometrist

MSci Optometrist

Since 2007, BBR Optometry has been one of the chosen placement practices to deliver The University of Manchester’s MSci Degree. At the end of their second year at the university, prospective students are selected via interview and to date BBR Optometry has supported over 22 students to their Masters in Optometry.

Appointments with our placement Optometrists take approximately one hour and are very thorough. The details and outcome of the appointment are discussed with a supervising Optometrist before the patient leaves.

Having worked with number of the MSci students, Technical Support Officer, Emily Willerton says, “They all bring something different to the practice and help to keep us on our toes. Having MSci Optometrists here means that we are always training which helps us all to keep our skills polished and up to scratch. The only negative is that after six months, they leave us but they almost always keep in touch and some even come back!”

Nick Black

Nick Black

CEO / Contact Lens and Low Vision Practitioner

Nick is CEO of BBR – a contact lens optician and low vision practitioner. He joined the practice in 2000 and also runs a hospital contact lens clinic.

Nick’s hero is Brendon McCullum (former New Zealand cricketer & captain) because he was an inspirational guy who allowed a team to perform better than the sum of parts, but in a fair respectful way and with a smile.

If he could have dinner with anyone it would be Brain Lahore – coach to the All Blacks for the first world cup. He developed a professional attitude in an amateur era that put New Zealand years ahead of the competition and, you could argue, defined the modern era we see today in terms of win ratio.

As you might have guessed, Nick hails from the beautiful New Zealand.

His favourite BBR product is the Lindberg Air Rim Titanium range as it’s versatile, practical and comfortable.

Our senior Optometrist, Nick Rumney, is absolutely passionate about clinical optometry and the real benefits it can bring to people. When not extolling the benefits to clients, patients and staff alike he can be found lecturing and teaching up and down the UK as well as abroad.
