Don’t forget those sunglasses this Sun Awareness Week

As part of Sun Awareness Week 2017 (May 8th-14th) run by the British Association of Dermatologists to raise awareness of the importance of adequate skin protection against the sun, BBR wishes to remind clients and members of the wider the general public that it’s not only sunscreen they need to be concerned about but also sunglasses.

Daniel Read, practice manager at BBR, says: “We all know that over-exposure to the sun without adequate sunscreen can lead to not only painful sunburn but can also be a major contributor to skin cancer.

“What many people may not be so aware, however, is the importance of protecting your eyes against harmful UV rays as extended exposure has been linked to eye damage, including cataracts, pingueculae, pterygia and photokeratitis that can cause temporary vision loss.”

That’s why BBR recommends everyone wears sunglasses that block 100 per cent of UV rays.

Daniel adds: “We stock a wide range of sun specs to suit every need, whether it be for sport, for wearing when exploring or just to don when lazing around during your holidays.

“Frames with a close-fitting wraparound style provide the best protection because they limit how much stray sunlight reaches your eyes from above and beyond the periphery of your sunglass lenses.

“Everyone wants to look good in their sunglasses but equally important, however, is ensuring the right tints are chosen as there is a huge variation in the quality available.

“A good sunglass lens can balance light and shade, be comfortable in different light conditions, provide better protection from glare and enhance contrast.

“We recommend starting with finding the right tint for you, and in Maui Jim and Serengeti in particular we offer two of the best manufacturers of sun lenses around. Our Dispensing Opticians are experts in helping you find the right solution for you and are happy to give advice,” he added.
